To remove stray cattle from ever busier streets of the city, Municipal corporation, Jalandhar has got fabricated an animal friendly cattle catcher attached to a truck. The hydraulic trolley gets down to the road level.After the animal is put in to it and railings secured, the trolley is raised to the truck level and the animal transferred into the truck. This process causes minimum stress to the animal.
Earlier, at times, the animal was lifted up side down with its feet tied with chains. Such methods had caused great concern among animal lovers.

The bus accident near Lambra ( Jalandhar ) which led to the tragic death of two CT Institute students has , again, shown that Jalandhar- Nakodar- Jagraon highway is very accident prone.
After the construction of the high level bridge on Sutlej at village Sangewal between Jagraon and Nakodar, the entire highway between Jalandhar- Nakodar- Jagraon has increased manifold . As this road is is merely two lane and with so many villages en route, it has become very accident prone.
Nakodar Jagraon section is , now a toll road . The toll contractors M/s Rajdeep are providing ambulance services and trauma vans. But Jalandhar- Nakodar section, which is the most accident prone road is without this facility. Ambulance services should be , immediately , arranged here.

Drama division of Information & Broadcasting Ministry performed at BD Arya College For Girls, Jalandhar Cantt the play " Darwaze Khol Diyoo' by dramatist Krishan Chander. The play exhorts Indians to rise above caste and racial divisions.

Double distilled " English "liquor ( other being country or 'desi' ) is, now,officially defined as I.M.F.L. This means Indian Made Foreign Liquor. How can a thing made in India be foreign and a " foreign " product made in India.
Can any reader throw any light on this dichotomy ?
Mian Sahib, the great legendary Pir of Basti Danishmandan was revered by all communites. Devotees would often ask for a wish and if fulfilled would get a floral design ( boota ) carved. Of the many legends associated with this Pir Baba, here is one :-
When Mian Sahib was young he seved his senior Pir with legendary devotion. Once, the senior Pir went to visit a nearby village of Safipur- Changi. There the senior Pir expressed a desire for having boiled rice for his meal. But it started raining there and it seemed very difficult to procure boiled rice locally. Not to deny his master's wish , Mian Sahib ran back to Basti Danishmandan. From there he carried on his head, all the way to Safipur, a Anghiti ( coal fired stove ) burning with a pot of rice cooking on it.
In the cultural festival organised by Indian Cultural Association at MGSM Janta College, Kartarpur ( Jalandhar ) , Gurpreet Singh Virk, a student of MBA-I secured first position in the much coveted event- Folk Dance ( Male ).
Director-cum- Principal C.L. Kochhar congratulated the participants and praised the faculty members Amit Kohli, Ramandeep Singh Johal and Gagandeep for their great efforts in preparing the 8 member team of the college.
A two day workshop was held by the Department of Psychology, Kanya Maha Vidyalaya ( KMV College ) , Jalandhar. Psychology students of the college showcased their skills by offering free testing and counselling.
The tests measured intelligence, personality, adjustment, interests, attitude, anxiety stress depression especially exam related . Suitable counselling was given . A stress management workshop was held in which all students of the College were guided about management of stress especially the role of music therapy.
HMV College Jalandhar's Lawn Tennis team comprising of Sonia Sharma, Anuradha and Jasbir Kaur won the GNDU Lawn Tennis Championship held at Ram Bagh, Amritsar.

Ram Sarup Gupta ( aged 85 years ) is one of very few pre 1947 residents of Basti Danishmandan. He still cycles around 8 km daily and has an excellent memory.A pre independence Congress leader Mr. Gupta is very well known and respected figure in the Basti. At the time of independence, their family's books and stationery shop in Bazar Sheikhan (M/s. Gupta Brothers )was the biggest. Their 3 storeyed house in Basti Danishmandan still retains its pre 1947 charm when it was the highest building in the Basti. These are the photographs of Mr. Gupta and his heritage house in Basti Danishmandan.
