To day is " World Environment Day ". Environment preservation is a very important issue in Jalandhar and Punjab and other places .
Punjab means land of five rivers . Presently , it is fast becoming " BE- AAB " meaning "without water " Urgent steps are required to control this desertification of Punjab .
A leading environment expert of Jalandhar , Dr. Kahlon pointed out that present ecological conditions of Punjab are very similar to those of Rajasthan about 1500 years ago ( before a large part of Rajasthan became desert ).He advocates a massive reforestation and change of cropping pattern in Punjab.
Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar has introduced , for graduation courses , a compulsory subject on EVS ( Environmental Studies ) so as to create awareness about protection of the environment.
