Phagwara on the Jalandhar - Ludhiana GT Road is one of Punjab 's most prosperous cities . It has many big industrial units like JCT , Sukhjit Starch ,Wahid Sangar Sugar Mills etc. It is known as the city of engineering artisans ( Karigara Da Shahr - Phagwara ) . Phagwara , also , has the maximum NRI population.
But because Phagwara was part of erstwhile Princely State of Kapurthala , it forms at present a Tehsil of Kapurthala District. Between Phagwara and Kapurthala there is Jalandhar District and Jalandhar town. The distance from Phagwara to Kapurthala is arounfd 45 km.Citizens of Phagwara face lot of inconvenience when they have to visit District HQ for administrative work .
Citizens of Phagwara want a separate district for themselves.
