V.V.I.P.s & Video Conferencing

The new technology tool of video conferencing can greatly help all. At the venue of any political rally a giant digital screen can be put up and VIPs can address the public from this screen . Leaders can remain at a safe place which may be any where. Firstly, would greatly protect them from security angle which seems to be very serious considering terrorists' threats of disruption. Secondly, this would avoid unnecessary hold ups in the traffic at busy city crossings . Passing of long convoys creates avoidable inconvenience on roads for ordinary non -VIP Indians.

Jazia on Sikhs in Pakistan !

We are shocked to learn of imposition of Jazia tax on Sikhs in Taliban controlled Pakistan ( mainly NWFP ) . In fact the entire resurgence of extremism in Afghanistan - Pakistan border belt is an action replay of history when many invaders marched through the Kyber Pass into India ( including Pakistan Punjab ).

The only time these restless areas were effectively subdued were when they were governed by the legendary General Hari Singh Nalwa under Shere-e-Punjab -Maharaja Ranjit Singh . In fact, the famous dialogue of Gabbar Singh in film Sholay :- " So Ja Bete Nahin To Gabbar Aa Jaye Ga " is originally about Gen. Nalwa. Afghan mothers would scare their infants by warning ' Khufta Shu-Aamad Baba Haria ).

( It is a matter of great pride for Indians that the legendary General Hari Singh Nalwa is great great grand father of Abhinav Bindra 's mother . Abhinav Bindra is the winner of Beijing Olympics Gold Medal in Shooting. )

Sugar Prices Shoot Up

While the weekly inflation numbers report near zero inflation rate, consumers feel greatly affected by sugar prices which are , now, Rs.30/- in retail. Govt. needs to totally decontrol sugar industry and let market forces play freely. We have a vicious circle of large sugar cane production -leading to slump in prices- lower cane acreage leading to spurt in sugar rates. Govt. should , however, remain alert on prices and permit liberal imports to check any manipulation by producers or traders.

We only have to look at the example of allowing free business in telephony and see the results. After decontrol of telephone industry, India is truly ' speaking " with probably the lowest rates in the world.

Dr. B. R. Ambedkar 's 118 th birth anniversary is being celebrated all over the country. In Jalandhar various functions were held. With voting in just a few days, political parties are trying to derive political mileage too.

But Dr. Ambedkar stature is above any caste limitation. His role is also not limited to being the architect of Indian Constituion. Dr. Ambedkar is also modern India's greatest social reformer regarding upliftment of status of women. The drafting and passing of the Hindu Code Bill which ended bigamy by Hindus and ensuring equal property rights for women were , also ,Dr. Ambedkar's contributions in building a new India. We realise the value of these progressive legislations when we see the regressive steps taken on Women by Taliban in our neighbourhood.

Dr. Ambedkar 's place is with Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel and Subhash Chander Bose.
