Winter has set in right earnest. Temperatures are . Amritsar in Punjab and Adampur in Jalandhar district tend to be the coldest. Days are misty and clear sun shine is missing.

Dubai Financial Crisis- Families of Dubai NRIs in Jalandhar Worried

No body expected that there could happen a financial crisis in Dubai. Dubai was considered to be very rich .Just when the world economy was being widely thought to be emerging from recession Dubai State owned corporations Dubai World and Nakheel have disclosed huge debts ( collectively over 3,50,000 crore INR )

Many families in Jalandhar have their young men working in Dubai especially in construction sector. There is a nagging fear that construction activity in Dubai and also in nearby countries may slow down considerably.

Indian workers would be the first to be rendered jobless.

Let us hope the Governments in UAE do not let investors'confidence suffer and work out rescue packages. Indian Govt. , especially the Indian Consulate in Dubai should be instructed to safe guard Indian workers' interest to the maximun extent possible.

Cash Starved Punjab State Electricity Board Splurges Crores on Rest House For Chief Minister's Convenience

A report carried out by the highly reputed daily " The Tribune " on misuse of PSEB's funds was a topic of animated discussion among Jalandhar citizens.

According to information provided under RTI , Punjab State Electricity Board ( PSEB ) has spend crores on construction and renovation of its Rest House in \village Badal ( Muktsar ). This facility seems to be used for Chief Minister's convenience.

It is really shocking that whereas PSEB cites reasons of near bankruptcy for hiking rates on urban paid consumers ,it is spending crores on politicians.

Whereas an agriculturist who may be owning land whose market worth may run into hundreds of crores is being given free electricity , an urban shopkeeper who may be earning Rs. 100 or so daily is being charged at PENAL ( COMMERCIAL ) rate for his "crime" of earning his livelihood.

It seems we are still being governed by feudal lords.

Auto Rickshaw Strike ( 23-11-09 ) in Jalandhar-Authorities Should Take Sympathetic Attitude

On 23-011-09, auto rickshaw (I three wheelers ) operators of Jalandhar observed a strike. They were protesting against the uncooperative attitude of the administration , including traffic police.

Authorities should act facilitators and not as ones who obstruct. A positive spirit is required. We should shed the hang over of colonial mindset of exploitation of common man.

Three wheelers are desperately required because of inadequacy of a public transport system.

Transport sector continues to be over regulated. Those running commercial vehicles should be offered all help by the authorities, including traffic police.

Days of "INSPECTOR- QUOTA RAJ " are over. Transport sectors should be freed from bureaucratic and political shackles. Permit system should be abolished. Let market forces prevail.

Strict action should be taken against any one found harassing drivers / vehicle owners.

Paid Consumers of Electricity in Punjab- Taken For a Ride

Punjab Government has played a cruel joke with urban paid consumers of electricity . It continues to issue bills at inflated rates. Furthermore , these paid consumers are being charged hiked rates from a retrospective date. These " arrears " are being , also, billed along with hiked rates bills. Punjab Govt.had , earlier , assured that it would roll back the hikes .

This worst sort of discrimination . It is 21 st century's " JAZIA " where on the one hand ,electricity is being supplied free of cost to agriculturists , many of whom own land worth hundreds of crores. On the other hand , an urban modest shopkeeper is being made to pay a penal " COMMERCIAL " rate for his "crime" of earning his livelihood.

Paid urban consumers are planning mass action like sugar cane farmers . They may adopt the Gandhian way of protest by boycotting, en mass, payment of inflated electricity bills

With the opening of Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences ( PIMS ) near this railway crossing there would be a further increase in traffic.

As PIMS , Jalandhar would be of PGI standard, all medical emergencies ( ambulances ) would be rushed to it.

So a Railway Over Bridge should be constructed on a very urgent basis.

Punjab Heading Towards Desertification-Excessive Pumping of Ground Water

" Hindustan Times" carried a front page report warning of desertification threat looming over Punjab. By the year 2025 one third of Punjab can become dry. Urbanisation and excessive use of ground water are main culprits.

Earlier also experts has been warning agaist the plunder of Punjab's water, In fact after rice started to be grown in Punjab ( replacing less water consuming crops like ground nut ) water table has been falling drastically.

The biggest irony is that the Govt. is subsidising this " desertification " by providing free electricity to farmers. It is an open secret that agriculturists are using booster machines of much more than the permitted horse power.

At a Press Conference held in Jalandhar Balwant Singh Ramoowalia highlighted the plight of 24 abandoned "NRI Brides ". These matrimonial frauds are worst cases of human trafficking.
