Jalandhar Citizens Mourn Untimely Death of Actor Nirmal Pandey
Nirmal Pandey starred as Jagga in Pamela Rooks film " Train to Pakistan " based on a novel by Khushwant Singh.
Nirmal Pandey passed away in Mumbai due to heart attack.
The actor's other notable films were were Bandit Queen and God Mother.
( English novel "Train to Pakistan " was prescribed in the General English ( Second Year ) graduation ( TDC ) course by Guru Nanak Dev University. Students had greatly admired the lead role played by Nirmal Pandey )

Give Relief on Back Breaking Road Toll Taxes
A single trip in car from Jalandhar to Ludhiana costs around Rs. 85 at the Phillaur ( Sutlej Bridge ) Toll Tax Plaza. The biggest irony is that this exorbitant sum is the same for a small Maruti 800 / Nano car and a Rs. 15 Lakh+ SUV !. Besides, any one who shows an aggressive posture , like blowing a hooter or beaming a beacon , not only gets through free BUT IS GIVEN PRIORITY THROUGH A VIP PASSAGE .
Middle class urban Punjabi is already reeling under heavy price rises . He should , immediately , be given relief in Government taxes. Let the Govt. begin by rationalising and decreasing the Back breaking Road Toll Taxes
Maruti 800 cars should be treated at par with motor cycles / scooters. VIP passage should be closed.

Lions Club Pooja , Jalandhar Holds Vocational Training Courses
Lions Club , Pooja Jalandhar is conducting vocational courses like tailoring and stitching for girls in Shri Guru Singh Sabha Mohalla Gobindgarh Jalandhar.
A fuction to mark the completion of second batch ( tailoring ) was held where all the successful trainees were present. The Chief Guest was former Governor Sawtantra Sabharwal . Lok Adalat would be held on 20-02-2010 in the Judicial Complex Jalandhar . 10 benches are expected to hear around 1200 cases.

No Power Cuts in Jalandhar For Now
It is heavenly for urban Punjabis these days. No power cut . Can operate computers any time Or 24 hour recharge cell phones.
We hope this situation continues , especially in the hot summer months.
Allow Hooter / Beacon Vehicles on Highways Only For Ambulances or Fire brigades
These days our highways have become very crowded and accident prone.There is a massive construction activity going on the GT Road near Jalandhar. This restricts the flow of traffic and makes our roads even more accident prone.
Every step should be taken to make them safer.
Vehicles of " VIP Indians " blow their hooters and are a traffic hazard on our roads.. These should not be allowed.
Every Indian is equal and no vehicle except that on emergency duty like ambulance etc. should claim a first right of passage.
Further , nearly all of these Hooter blowing vehicles do not pay any Road Toll Tax and still want to move ahead of those who pay in full road toll taxes !!!
Every body should keep in mind that India is now a FREE COUNTRY.

Convert Old Upper Ganges Canal ( Haridwar to Roorkee ) in to a National Heritage ( Museum )
Convert the abandoned old section of the Upper Ganga ( Ganges )Canal ( from Har-Ki - Pauri, Haridwar to Roorkee ) in to a sort of national heritage museum- thinkers of Jalandhar discussed animatedly.
This section ,originally constructed around 1850 by the East India Company , was at that time the biggest canal system ever undertaken. It was and still is an engineering marvel It has aqueducts , super passages , massive sluice gates , spillways etc. There are massive "lion statues " guarding the canal , near Roorkee.
The Solanii aqueduct near Roorkee, apart from being an engineering marvel has the distinction of having first ever Steam Engine ( before the Bombay line ) actively operating in India to ferry massive amounts of earth required for raising the level of the canal 's course.
But. presently , this old section of the beautiful canal is in dis use and a new canal course has been constructed parallel to the old canal. The old canal is in a very pitiable condition. It is neglected and open to vandalism.
It should , immediately , be declared a 'National Heritage " and suitably preserved. It can , also , be developed in to an attractive tourist designation.
Further , aqua riverine life like the great Indian Gharial , which once was abundant in the Ganga and which is now threatened can be introduced in some sections of this great canal.

Punjab State Electricity Board ( PSEB ) on Strike Today
Today , there was not any power cut in Jalandhar.
Punjab State Electricity Board has become a victim of partisan policies of Government where by Paid Urban consumers get the bills and rural landlords get FREE electricity. Such non business like policies have landed PSEB in complete mess.
Either Government should run PSEB on business lines or it should give FREE electricity to ALL and treat all the expenditure incurred by PSEB as Government expenditure to be provided for budgetary support ( like Shagun ,and other welfare Schemes ).
. It is the deadly mix of business and selective welfare policies which has ruined PSEB..An institution like PSEB can either be run on Corporate lines or as a Govt. Charitable Trust. NOT BOTH

Jalandhar citizens are discussing animatedly the attack in the Chandigarh court premises by Ahmedabad based Utsav Sharma on the convicted molester IPS officer, SPS Rathore.
While we do not condone any body taking law in his own hands, this incident is indicative of common Non VIP Indians' frustration at the way the rich and the famous are able to get away lightly.
Justice delayed should not , now , become Justice by People .Government should realise the gravity of the situation and devise ways to expedite the process of law. Every body should be treated equally before the law enforcing agencies. The cult of " VIP TREATMENT " for a select few has no place in FREE INDIA

Petrol prices have been hiked in Punjab. But the hike in petrol prices is nearly 4 times the rise in diesel prices. Urban Punjabis are very discontented at the brazen anti urban polices of the Government.With the recent price hike in essential commodities especially food items , Govt. instead of providing relief to Urban Punjabis has chosen to impose crippling new fiscal burdens on them.

Jalandhar Citizens Regret " Divide And Rule " Policies
Jalandhar citizens are very concerned the way some Maharashtra politicians are trying to undermine India's unity by pressing for " sons of soil " policies. This is a very dangerous trend and can have a domino effect.
Laws should be enacted so that politicians who engage in such anti national activities are debarred from contesting elections
